Far from Home, But Close to His Degree

Ali Saleh didn’t have to think twice about leaving his native Tanzania to attend American InterContinental University in Houston. “An American degree means so much. Everyone knows an American education is the best you can get. I wanted to get the best, so I came here.”

Ali didn’t show up in the U.S. not having done his research, however. He actually enrolled at AIU Houston while still home in Tanzania. “I had a sister who lived in Houston, and she sent me information about all sorts of schools. AIU was very communicative with me and helpful in answering all of my questions in a timely fashion. Everything was very convenient and the business administration degree program at the school was exactly what I was looking for.”

Now halfway through earning his Bachelor’s degree, Ali is very happy with the choice he made. Sure he misses his family back in Tanzania (that’s why he will visit them this summer), but his studies are keeping him very busy. “I decided on AIU because I could see that they were concerned with students getting their degrees fast but without sacrificing real learning. When I was looking at schools, I had decided I was going to devote myself to getting my degree and that I would be very focused. AIU isn’t a school for someone who wants to coast, but for someone who wants to prepare themselves to go out and get involved in the real world of business as quickly as they can.”

Although he won’t graduate until March 2007-and then plans to go on and get his MBA before returning home-Ali already has a good idea of how he wants to get involved in the real world. “Tanzania is on the African coast and is very up-and-coming in terms of business. I want to do import-export between Tanzania and Dubai and parts of the Far East. I’m also thinking about real estate in the Far East. The market is still fresh, and I’ll have all the knowledge I need to get right into it.”
